Clayton Orchard is a peach farm located in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. It was established by Dr. Carlyle N. Clayton (shown above)
and his wife, Adelaide, in the mid-1970s. Dr. Clayton started his distinguished career as a professor of plant pathology at North Carolina
State University in 1945. He was a nationally recognized expert in fruit diseases, especially those affecting peaches and apples. He worked
closely with horticulturist Franklin Correll in developing many of the peach varieties now grown in the southeastern United States. These
varieties include Winblo, Norman, Candor, and Clayton (named in Dr. Clayton's honor). Shortly before retiring from N.C. State, he purchased
some land in Montgomery County near the Sandhills Research Station, where he had conducted much of his research, and started Clayton Orchard.
Although their permanent residence remained in Raleigh, the Claytons lived at the orchard the majority of the time between 1979 and the early
1990s. Dr. Clayton passed away in 1998 and his wife, in 2007. The family continues to maintain the orchard. In 2001, the N.C. Department of
Transportation purchased approximately 40 acres of the farm, including the house and sheds, to build a highway (U.S. 220). A new farm building
was constructed at that time.
